PC market down -- but don't just blame AsiaThe PC market took a big hit last year in the wake of the Asian economic crisis, but analysts are warning that 1998 isn't looking much better. According to Bruce McCabe, senior industry analyst for Gartner Group, vendors operating in Asia "face a minefield in 1998". He anticipates currency fluctuations, project cancellations, late payments and bad debts will continue to plague the industry -- yielding minimal improvement in the PC market during the year.

SCO's new UnixWare

With an eye on the budding market for high-end Unix servers outfitted with Intel processors, The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) last month unveiled the latest version of its UnixWare operating system, designed to provide an upgrade path to Intel's forthcoming 64-bit Merced processors. UnixWare 7 combines elements of SCO's OpenServer Release 5 and UnixWare 2 operating systems, and comes tailored for six uses: large-scale business applications, Web publishing and electronic commerce.

Win98 to debut on June 25

Microsoft is planning to send Windows 98 to manufacturing in mid-May and launch the next-generation operating system on June 25.

Motorola gets 300MHz, sets sights on 400MHz Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector announced the availability of its PowerPC 750 microprocessor running at 300MHz and also said that its silicon wafers using copper technology have completed tests and are on target for production toward the end of this year. Copper wiring is the newest darling of microprocessor manufacturers because it conducts electricity better than aluminium, which has predominated up to now. Copper is also easier to cool and is reliable at a greater range of temperatures.
