IBM Shifts Storage Technology to Tivoli

IBM Corp. said today that it will transfer its storage management technology to its network and systems management division in an effort to broaden its customer base and better integrate the two technologies.

Effective January 1, 1999, IBM's Storage Systems Division will hand over its ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) cross-platform, application and data storage management technology to Tivoli Systems Inc., an IBM subsidiary.

The move is designed to "significantly increase IBM's share of the growing distributed storage management market by combining the strength and technology of two of IBM's most successful divisions" and by taking advantage of the reach of Tivoli's sale force, IBM said in a press release.

Market research firm International Data Corp. projects that the storage management market will reach US$2.1 billion by the year 2001, IBM said.

ADSM provides integrated enterprise-wide network backup, archiving, storage management and disaster recovery planning capabilities.

Tivoli plans "significant " -- but as yet unspecified -- investments to enhance its enterprise management system, with a focus on boosting storage area network (SAN) capabilities and offer an integrated storage management system spanning mainframes to notebooks.
