Apple Computer has issued a recall for about 28,000 PowerBook batteries sold between January and August for use with its 15-in. PowerBook G4 computers. The batteries, which were made by LG Chem in South Korea, could overheat and pose a fire hazard.
Apple said in a statement that it has received four such reports. No injuries have been reported.
"Apple urges you to stop using your battery and to order a replacement battery immediately. If you continue to use your battery, do not leave it unattended and check for signs of overheating," the statement said.
The recall was issued by the computer maker in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Australian customers can access information at http://www.apple.com.au/support/powerbook/batteryexchange. Alternatively, they can call 133 622.
The batteries, which contain cells made during the last week of December 2003, have the model number A1045 and serial numbers that begin with HQ404, HQ405, HQ406, HQ407, or HQ408, Apple said. The model and serial numbers can be found on a label on the bottom of the battery.
No other PowerBook or iBook batteries are involved in the recall, the company said.
