Sleepycat Software announced the general availability Monday of Berkeley DB Java Edition (JE) 2.0, an upgrade to its open-source transactional Java database for developers. The new release supports Sun Microsystems Inc.'s J2EE standards and has double the performance of previous versions of the software, according to the company.
The J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) standards supported are J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA), Java Transaction API (JTA) and Java Management Extensions (JMX). The upgrade also features major improvements in storage efficiency for out-of-cache applications, so the software can run with a 30 percent to 70 percent improvement in data throughput, Sleepycat said.
Berkeley DB Java Edition 2.0 is also now officially certified on Sun's Solaris 10 operating system for 64-bit x86 platforms.
Sleepycat first shipped a Java version of its embedded database in June last year, targeting developers building high-performance applications.
Berkeley DB Java Edition 2.0 is available under a dual license, a no-cost open-source license allowing redistribution if the application using the database is open source, and a commercial license for redistribution of proprietary applications. The database can be downloaded from http://www.sleepycat.com/products/je.shtml.
Open-source projects already using the Berkeley DB JE database include JBossCache, Apache Geronimo (ActiveMQ JMS), JavaSpaces and Spring, according to Sleepycat.
