Poll finds security still keeps IT execs awake at night

A recent poll has found that 88 percent of IT managers believe the complexity in their IT organisation is now higher than it was 18 months ago.

Carried out at the Citrix iForum conference in Sydney last week, 342 IT managers responded to the poll, with 57.2 percent claiming that the organisation they worked for rated the role of IT highly.

And while sales still drives the organisation, with 27.1 percent saying that it was the division with the most influence over the future business direction, 24.5 percent said IT came a close second in their companies.

But as for what keeps IT staff awake at night, the number-one concern is still security, with more than 58 percent of those polled ranking it amongst their top three concerns.

Business continuity, winning the hearts and minds of end users and staffing and skills issues, came next. ICT governance was of least concern, with only 11 percent listing this as a problem.

Asked to name the technologies that excited them the most, IT executives voted for wireless technologies, server virtualisation and the convergence of voice, data and video as the 'next big things', at 19.6 and 19.1 percent and 12 percent respectively.

Internet telephony, Web services and identity management each received 9 percent of votes.

Gary O'Brien, Citrix Australia and New Zealand vice president, said organisations are working to control growing IT complexity by centralising management and access.

"Organisations are looking to simplify by consolidating servers and implementing secure access infrastructure to centralize IT management," O'Brien said.

"With wireless technologies topping the shopping list for new projects our customers, who have invested in Citrix infrastructure will be well prepared to provide the infrastructure for the evolving virtual workplace."
