Airservices comms installation takes flight

Airservices Australia has started on the installation of stage three of a primary communications system for air traffic control in Australia.

The $34 million project aims to replace the current communications system and includes initial infrastructure supply and an ongoing service and support contract to maintain the system.

Prime contractor for the Very High Frequency Air Ground Air (VHF AGA) System is NEC Australia which won the bid in December 2003.

Stage two of the project, which involved manufacture, assembly and delivery of equipment to an additional 28 remote sites, has just been completed. The remaining 120-plus sites of stage three will be installed by July next year, signalling the completion of the final stage of the project.

Airservices Australia project manager David Mitchell said project milestones have been right on time.

Rohde & Schwarz are contracted by NEC Australia to provide VHF radio equipment, while Frequentis (Austria) contracted to provide the VIC (Voice Switch Interface Controller) and RIC (Radio Interface Controller) equipment.
