A prominent Web standards organization announced Tuesday the creation of a new committee to study how the idea of semantics and the Semantic Web can be applied to service-oriented systems.
The Semantic Execution Environment Technical Committee (SEE) will develop guidelines for the environment around Semantic Web services, OASIS (the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) said in a press release. The goal of the Semantic Web is to describe data in Web pages more precisely so that computer applications can share and retrieve it more easily.
The committee is not developing a specification but will instead describe ways in which knowledge management and semantic tools can improve a service-oriented architecture. The committee will study standards such as the World Wide Web Consortium's Semantic Web, Owl (Ontology Working Language) and Topic Maps.
The committee will hold its first meeting Nov. 11 and is open to companies, nonprofit groups and individuals, according to OASIS.
