Boot camp teaches testing basics

Test early and test often is an instruction that is increasing in its frequency and while testers have been a specialized group for some time, their numbers are growing.

IT professional are starting to build and reassess their software testing competence with many taking matters to the next stage by sitting the ISEB (Information Systems Examination Board) software testing certification programs, according to contact to quote: Mike Weale, chief operating officer at Planit

Weale said Planit saw a 46 percent increase over the past 12 months in people attending and completing training courses.

Planit, which provides tester training courses to support all roles in the systems development lifecycle, runs a software testing boot camp as an induction program to give entry level testers a fundamental grasp of testing principles. They can then 'hit the ground running', Weale said, with a skills solution for future and expected software testing resource needs. Feedback has it that the return on investment for organizations educating their developers and business users in software testing skills is significant. It supports the view that errors should be detected early in a project to save money and time later. Applicants for testing courses need to have 12 months experience in software development or testing or have some theoretical knowledge of software test and development practices for the ISEB Foundation Certificate in Software Testing.

For the ISEB Practitioner Modules, participants must hold the ISEB Foundation Certificate in Software Testing and have at least 18 months experience in software testing.

Weale, who said course applicants are drawn from the gamut of IT tasks, including project and program managers, test managers, quality managers, IT managers, business managers, team leaders, analysts, software developers, project leaders, technical testers and the 'testing' roles, added that individuals opt to take the training as well as company-nominated staff.

Planit, which is the only ISEB course provider in the Asia-Pacific region, offers one-, two- and three-day courses - at different certification levels - as well as customized courses which can go for five days. Courses are available in all mainland capital cities and Canberra.

The exam for the ISEB Foundation Certificate is a one-hour, 40-question, multiple choice paper. For the ISEB Practitioner Certificate, upon completion of the four modules; Technical Tester, Practical Tester, Test Manager and Test Strategist, the exam is a three-hour written paper with both compulsory and choice-based questions, which is then evaluated by an invigilation panel; and the results determined.

Weale said the ISEB Software Testing Certificate program is the only internationally accepted certification for software testing and has more than 15,000 ISEB Foundation Certificate holders globally.

The ISEB is a professional body that provides industry recognized qualifications that measure competence, ability and performance across Information Systems (IS) disciplines.
