IT jobs soar, index shows

The amount of IT and telecommunications jobs advertised online has jumped more than 80 per cent over the last 12 months, according to online recruitment and research firm Olivier.

By aggregating results from the three main job search databases; Seek, My Career and Career One, Olivier compile an Internet job index each month -- one which has been showing IT&T jobs to be rising consistently over the last two years. These results are seasonally adjusted in consultation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The Index released last week shows advertised jobs to have risen in all IT&T sectors. Most markedly, jobs in desktop support and helpdesk rose 165 per cent in the twelve months from June 2003.

Jobs in hardware engineering systems rose 138 per cent and IT instruction, training and writing jobs rose 129 per cent.

Robert Olivier, director of Olivier group, believes that career opportunities in IT are steadily on the rise again.

“Due to the slow consistent growth in IT jobs advertised, this is not a just flash in the pan,” he said.
