Source code management vendor sets up shop in Australia

Asia Pacific expansion underway

After increasing its customer base in Australia by 40 per cent in the past year, Perforce Software has finally set up shop in Sydney.

The Perforce software configuration management system (SCM) is a tool used to manage source code and digital assets in the enterprise.

In addition to application software companies, SCM is typically used by firms in the game development industry, pharmaceutical and financial services markets.

More than 200,000 developers at 4,000 organizations use the system worldwide and Asia Pacific customers include Canon, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, Toyota, Wipro and Sony.

The new Sydney office has been established to support customers in Australia, India and China, and sets the scene for additional growth in the region.

Service Integrity CTO Jothy Rosenberg, said the software is particularly useful when mixing open source and proprietary code in a product, which can put a company at legal risk.

"Programmers are always looking for ways to not write code and instead use what already exists, so they all look at open-source repositories whenever possible," he said.

"They are pretty careful, but it's not easy to be sure if the license on that particular module is clean."

Microsoft indemnifies its customers against challenges to its software, and other companies sell insurance to protect users against lawsuits.

Rosenberg uses Perforce SCM from Perforce Software to control the source code, and ProtexIP from Black Duck Software to verify that code is clean.

"With all the litigation going on, this is becoming essential," he added.
