EMC sets out to Inform

The debate surrounding the commoditization of technology continued yesterday in Sydney with more than 1000 delegates attending EMC Australia's Inform event which featured controversial author Nicholar Carr.

The author of Does IT Matter?, Carr said technology doesn't matter but the "way you knit your business together" does.

EMC Australia managing director Steve Redman opened the event saying information management has become a critical differentiator.

"More than ever, information and how it is managed and used by businesses will be an important competitive tool in the global economy," he said.

“With the focus on making information lifecycle management a reality, EMC is experiencing great growth. We have taken 60 percent of the $1 billion growth in the storage market over the past year."

Telstra's product services director Graham Mirabito also spoke at the event outlining the telco's role in providing networked services to business.

“Transforming the role of a telco means there’s a whole lot of new opportunities and a whole new range of services for our customers,” Mirabito said.

“We find ourselves linked to the IT industry and we want to strengthen Telstra’s position in the IT market and have the ability to provide end-to-end services.

“The Telstra business model will change. Value-based solutions, on-demand services, traditional model and a new IP model will be our focus.

The focus is going to be more on applications than on infrastructure.”

Microsoft, Cisco and Oracle also participated in the event, staging workshops on server virtualisation, data replication over IP and enterprise content management.
