Sonicwall snaps up Aventail

Consolidation in the remote access technology market as another vendor gets taken over

IT security vendor Sonicwall has announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Aventail Corporation, a privately-held provider of SSL VPN remote access solutions for approximately $US25 million in cash.

Sonicwall claims the deal will allow it to better meet the needs of a broader set of customers by combining the two companies' SSL VPN offerings.

The Seattle-based Aventail is recognized for its higher-end SSL VPN enterprise products, while Sonicwall has a suite of appliances designed for small and mid-sized organizations.

Sonicwall president and chief executive officer Matthew Medeiros said the Aventail acquisition is an important step in the company's growth strategy and allows it to compete more effectively in the remote access space.

Aventail, president and chief executive officer Evan Kaplan, said the combined product sets and expertise offer great potential for future cross-development and growth.

Sonicwall will continue to rely on its worldwide channel network and two-tier distribution model and plans to grow the feature sets of both companies' products.
