Geek week in review

Nolo mojo. Lulu.com is suing Hulu.com for trade name infringement, alleging the new site will cause marketplace confusion. For those of you not paying close attention, Lulu is a site that lets you publish and sell your own books; Hulu is the NBC/Fox site for distributing video. (Or, to put it another way, Lulu is a site for people who know how to read.) No word yet on whether LaLa, PuPu or JuJu will join the suit.

Blind justice. American Blinds and Wallpaper Factory has dropped its long-running suit against Google. The company had claimed that running ads for competitors when users searched for ABWF infringed its trademark. I guess it wasn't such an open and shut case after all.

Sowing his wild oats. A court has ruled Whole Foods Market can swallow Wild Oats Market, despite Whole Foods CEO John Mackey's habit of anonymously trashing Wild Oats on Yahoo's financial message boards. Apparently, the court found that statements like 'WiLd oAtz R such LuzRs!' had no bearing on the US$565 million deal.

The spamski what amski. Generally I try to ignore spam in the hopes it will go away. (It doesn't.) But this one was so appallingly stupid I had to note it. Allegedly from the IRS, it urged me to collect a refund of US$268.32 by visiting a website at kgb-paintball.spb.ru. (Yes, it seems former Russian spies are big into paintball.) The spammers didn't even attempt to make it look like a valid government URL, because they apparently think Americans really are that stupid. And all too often they're right.

Goodbye, Rupee Tuesday. The Bank of India suffered a swami - err, a swarm of malware attacks last week, which were first discovered by security vendor Sunbelt Software. Visitors to the site could become infected by at least 22 pieces of rogue software. Once again, a gang of naughty Russian hackers are suspected of planting the data stealing malware. Hey, paintball supplies are expensive. Remind me again, who won the cold war?
