HP strengthens e-discovery capabilities

Unveils upgraded and renamed Reference Information Storage System archiving product, updates to Data Protector backup software and new data retention services.

Hewlett-Packard this week moved to boost its e-discovery capabilities with the unveiling of an upgraded and renamed Reference Information Storage System archiving product, updates to its HP Data Protector backup software and new data retention services.

The company also shifted responsibility for newly named Integrated Archive Platform from HP's storage group to the Information Management product division. The change comes as HP shifts the platform's focus from collecting and archiving e-mail to helping corporations ensure that corporate governance and regulatory requirements are met.

Jonathan Martin, chief marketing officer, information management at HP, said the updated platform adds indexed search and policy management functions and the ability to pull content from Lotus Domino and "print streams" rather than just Microsoft Exchange data.

The Integrated Archive Platform is currently available and costs US$71,000 for a base system with a capacity of 1.4TB. The new list compares with the former price tag of about US$400,000, he said.

Martin said that future versions of the platform will add what he called "preventive nature" capabilities that would let businesses establish greater proactive content and data management controls to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

The new release of the HP Data Protector software adds support for Exchange 2007 and the ability to perform snapshots for Microsoft Volume Shadow Service-based technology or HP Enterprise Virtual Array products.

HP said it has also created an Information Discovery and Policy Definition Service to help users build and maintain multilevel e-discovery and organizational compliance strategies
