EMC announces hefty price hike for Mozy services

Plans to change from a single licensing model for all systems to separate schemes for desktop and server computers

EMC this week confirmed that it has notified customers that a massive price increase is about to kick in for users of its hosted MozyPro backup and recovery service

EMC gained the storage services last year with its purchase of Berkeley Data Systems. Just last month, EMC unveiled MozyEnterprise, which incorporates technology from three Mozy services along with pieces of EMC offerings such as RSA Security Inc. tools.

The company said it has contacted all MozyPro users to announce plans to change from a single licensing model for all systems to separate schemes for desktop and server computers. EMC said the current model is not a sustainable business model. All customers that sign up for the service from March 1 onward will be charged under the new pricing scheme, the company said.

Some monthly fee increases include from US$8.95 to $24.45 for a single server license and 10GB of storage, from US$29.75 to $69.75 for five servers and 20GB of storage, from US$89.50 to $244.50 for 10 servers and 100GB of storage, and from US$329.00 to $1,014 for 20 servers and 500GB.

EMC said it will "grandfather" current holders of MozyPro licenses to the current price list. These customers have 30 days to buy additional storage capacity at current prices.
