Symantec adds security manager

IT and security administers can automate planning, supervision and monitoring of security policies from a single location with the release of Symantec Enterprise Security Manager (ESM 5.5) in Australia, according to John Donovan, managing director for Australia and New Zealand.

He said the emergence of more sophisticated threats such as Nimda and Code Red has made fast response and deployment of updated network security policies more critical.

ESM allows IT administrators to assess and fix potential weaknesses in network infrastructure, as users can easily download the latest security updates from Symantec servers automatically and deploy them across the globe, he said.

Monitored via a central console, Donovan said ESM performs more than 2000 security and vulnerability checks on a range of operating system platforms including Windows NT/2000/XP, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Red Hat Linux as well as other systems like Novell NetWare and Open VMS.

Meta group program director March Bouchard said meeting IT security challenges today is 100 per cent dependent on the implementation of security policies.

Not only must security policies be established, Bouchard said, they must be embedded in the computing infrastructure in a manner that automates their enforcement.

He said ESM capabilities are suited to large organisations that have to demonstrate ongoing compliance with legislation such as the Privacy Amendment Act.
