Qantas boosts mobile device check-in options

New check-in and booking options part of paperless customer processing strategy.

Qantas announced this week a raft of new online check-in options as part of a broader mobile strategy to give customers greater access to information and services from portable devices.

From early 2009 Qantas will introduce a paperless check-in and a series of new online options in a bid to make the check-in process faster and simpler for international and domestic flyers.

Some of the new options include online check-in being extended to international customers; both domestic and international flyers having the option of selecting their seat from the point of booking; customers who do not book online still being able to select their seat through the “Manage Your Booking” service on Qantas.com; and customers who select their seat online before departure will be able to be automatically be checked-in with a 2D barcode sent to their mobile phone, portable device or PC.

Qantas GM John Borghetti said customers receiving their boarding pass on mobile or portable devices, like the iPhone 3G, can have an entirely paperless experience from booking, to check-in to boarding their flight.

“Customers with baggage can proceed directly to the bag drop facilities before heading straight to their flight," he said.

International customers who have already checked-in will proceed straight to a dedicated online bag drop counter.

All passengers and baggage will continue to pass through regular airport security screening.
