NEC opens new facility in Springfield QLD

The company has previously signed an agreement to provide the ICT infrastructure for the entire city.

NEC Australia has launched a new facility at the master-planned city of Greater Springfield, Queensland.

The facility was opened by NEC's Global Chairman, Hajime Sasaki. It is the first building to open in Springfield's commercial district.

As part of an agreement with the Springfield Land Corporation (SLC) NEC will be providing the ICT infrastructure for the entire city, which will allow users to exchange information on-demand using NEC technology and servers.

SLC general manager of commercial projects, Chris Schroor, said the alliance will create numerous jobs in Springfield and aid its emergence as a technologically advanced city.

"Springfield will be developed with fibre optic backbone extending out to all new residences and pre-provisioned within the CBD area," he said.

"It will also be linked through a diverse dark-fibre network connection to Brisbane CBD and local optic fibre connections across Springfield Central."

As part of the agreement, NEC has paid $15 million to rent part of the new $220M Polaris Data Centre, which will be used to provide managed services to the populace. The data centre has been designed as a primary and secondary data centre and also acts as a disaster recovery site, internet data centre and a carrier interconnect exchange for Springfield Central tenants.
