Branch office security, traffic management get a lift

Sentry 3.0 software adds longer traffic capture windows and more flow analysis tools to the platform

Cymtec is announcing reporting and threat-protection upgrades to its network monitoring, analysis and enforcement appliance to give better visibility of network traffic and boost network performance.

Sentry 3.0 software adds longer traffic capture windows and more flow analysis tools to the platform, which enables the device to provide better snapshots of network activity that can be used to troubleshoot network congestion.

The new version integrates with Active Directory to take advantage of user groups and policies rather than having to set policies on the appliance itself.

Sentry devices are typically deployed in branch offices between firewalls and access switches where they monitor traffic in and out of the branch. Because they include Webroot SpySweeper and Secure Computing SmartFilter Sentry appliances can block malware and URLs the software detects.

Sentry includes antivirus software and can isolate outbreaks of viruses and bot activity. The devices can block instant messaging, peer-to-peer file sharing, Web mail and streaming media. They include tools for bandwidth optimization and control. Sentry reporting can help locate infected machines.

The company competes with branch office security devices such as unified threat management devices as well as security software vendors that sell individual applications and suites.

The appliances come in two models: the Sentry 100 for US$3,995 and the Sentry 10 for US$1,295.
