Virgin trials 200Mbps home broadband access

100 households in Ashford get ultrafast downloads

Virgin Media has revealed that following successful labs trials, it is publicly testing 200Mbps broadband access.

The ISP, which late last year launched a 50Mbps consumer broadband service, is trialing the pilot scheme with 100 households in Ashford, Kent.

Virgin said that the trial, which will run for a minimum of six months, will allow internet connections to be used for the delivery of 3D and HD content, video conferencing and even home surveillance.

"We're really excited to be embarking on this journey of discovery. The 200Mbps pilot will give us further insight into how true 'wideband' services might be used by consumers," said Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media.
