Report: Sony Ericsson bails on Memory Stick Micro

ony Ericsson has made the tough but needed decision to break up with the format and embrace the more universal MicroSD.

After three years tethered to the ball and chain of Sony's Memory Stick Micro, Sony Ericsson has made the tough but needed decision to break up with the format and embrace the more universal MicroSD.

The news comes from Trusted Reviews, who heard it directly from the mouth of Sony Ericsson Global Marketing Director Fortuné Alexander. Alexander stated that the company is "moving in that direction" after the latest Sony Ericsson phones -- the Satio, Aino and Yari -- were shown to have MicroSD slots.

MicroSD is an increasingly popular and standardized format that is used in many cellphones and even the Nintendo DS.

Much like news of the universal charger, Sony Ericsson's decision to adopt the MicroSD shows the cellphone industry is inching ever closer to a kind of standardization that will benefit consumers looking to ditch proprietary tech.
