Draft NBN architecture documents expected early next month

NBN to leverage contractor communities for NBN rollout

Australian communications industry body, The Communications Alliance, will publish a draft set of national broadband network (NBN) architecture documents next month with information on the various network elements and functions in the fibre-to-the-premises and the wireless and satellite scenarios.

The documents form part of the NBN reference model, one of three major topics being addressed by Alliance workgroups. The group is also working on wholesale service and early deployment of the NBN. Almost 70 people have registered to work on the projects from 33 organisations across industry.

The NBN reference model will define a number of key aspects related to customer choice, the role and responsibility of service providers and options for interconnectivity between service providers, according to Communications Alliance lead NBN consultant, Gary McLaren.

“The diagrams will provide an opportunity for industry, regulatory and policy makers to continue the ongoing critical consultation and discussion regarding the NBN at a more detailed and practical level.”

These diagrams will highlight whether network elements and functions are wholesale or retail in nature and highlight options for interconnection from one service provider to another.

Executive Chair of NBN Co, Mike Quigley, is participating in the NBN Industry Connection Forums being run by the Communications Alliance to “connect to potential customer, retail service providers and others in industry”.

Quigley said over next six months, he expected to have largely completed building up organisation, designed the offer and selected the technology and network design.

“We have been negotiating with potential partners and expect to have the program plan established. We hope to be well underway with pricing architecture discussions and well into conducting tenders and if necessary, negotiating spectrum and satellite slots,” he said.

The NBN Co is still announcing its senior management team, but the exact number of jobs that the NBN will create remains uncertain.

“There will be a large number of job created by project, don’t expect jobs to be within the company,” he warned, adding the NBN will leverage the contractor communities through the country and that overall jobs created was likely to be in the “tens of thousands”.

“The company itself will be more in the order of 1000 than 10,000”, he said.

The Tasmanian NBN rollout will also provide key learning for the national strategy.
