NBN Tasmania adds OptiComm to NBN contractor list

Vendor to provide cable to Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point in addition to Corning Cable Systems

NBN Tasmania has signed OptiComm to provide wholesale equipment and services as part of stage one of the roll-out of the fibre-to-the-premise network in Tasmania.

Under the ‘letter of intent’, OptiComm will supply and manage the active components of the network providing the communities of Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point with access to high-speed broadband at speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

NBN Tasmania executive chairman Doug Campbell said OptiComm’s experience in delivering and managing fibre-to-the-premises wholesale products in greenfield estates had won them the deal.

The Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point legs of the NBN rollout are expected to be complete by mid-2010.

Earlier in the month NBN Tasmania awarded Corning Cable Systems the contract to supply the fibre optic cable to connect Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point as part of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

During December John Holland was also awarded a contract to deliver and construct backhaul cable routes to form the backbone of the broadband network between Port Latta and Smithton on Tasmania’s north-west coast, Georgetown on the north coast and St. Helens on the east coast, and the Hobart suburb of Midway Point and the lower east coast town of Triabunna.

Tasmania Premier David Bartlett also recently reiterated the state's aim of becoming the "most connected place on the planet" at the Realising our Broadband Future summit in Sydney.
