F-Secure to introduce ‘Digital Vault’ storage

Web-based storage hub concept makes its way to Australia

F-Secure will soon launch its ‘Digital Vault’ concept in Australia, a repository for digital assets that is designed to act as a storage hub for individual digital devices.

The hosted solution works much like a physical vault for real-world assets; important documents, photos, movie downloads and mobile phone content can be centralised so that whenever new content is added to the device, it is automatically uploaded to the Digital Vault.

“The Digital Vault takes backup to the next level,” said F-Secure ANZ regional Director, Indi Siriniwasa. “To date, conventional backup solutions have mostly been device or platform specific. The Digital Vault has been designed as a centralised repository, to which you can connect almost any digital device.”

The Digital Vault will be offered via an F-Secure partner, such as an ISP or mobile network operator. Backups can occur automatically at specified times or as directed by the customer.

F-Secure hopes the product will also allow people to quickly share content with friends and family. The product comes with customisable access privileges. A family, for example, can have a single shared Digital Vault with different content zones, such as a shared zone and a private zone for each family member.

It can also be connected to third party content sites such as SnapFish, Flickr and Photobucket.

To add content, users must open the Digital Vault application on their phone and click ‘Perform Backup’ to send it to backup via the customer’s mobile network. If a device is lost or stolen, the backed up content can be downloaded to a new device.

Mobile phone data charges would depend on the carrier.
