PM announces more Digital Regions winners

A further $6.4 million to help regional communities across Australia

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced four additional winning projects as part of the government's Digital Regions Initiative.

In a statement the Federal Government said it will spend $1.79 million on new medical record, administration and e-learning systems at 190 ambulance stations across New South Wales while the South Australian Digital Telehealth Network will receive $2.48 million to enhance its in-patient care and distance consultation services including 24 hour triage and liaison services.

A New South Wales TAFE project, HEALNet, an online professional development tool for nurses, will receive $881,000. Also in New South Wales, $1.265 million will be spent on telehealth systems for use by people in custody.

The Digital Regions Initiative, part of the government's initial response to the Regional Telecommunications Review in conjunction with the Rural and Regional National Broadband Network Initiative, is a four year, $60 million program to fund innovative digital enablement projects with state, territory and local governments.

An initial seven projects were announced by Rudd at the Realising Our Broadband Future conference last month. The projects are intended to provide support for community-focused digital initiatives outside of metropolitan areas, with particular focus on digital health services, online education and emergency and disaster response.
