IT job ads continue upward path

Olivier Job Index reports IT jobs ads on par with national average

IT job advertisements continued to grow and were slightly above the national average in December, up 0.49 per cent according to the latest results from the Olivier Job Index.

Across all industries, job ads increased 0.4 per cent, up about 10 per cent from their lowest point in July, although they remain 33.7 per cent lower than December 2008.

“This rise rounds off a remarkable recovery over the last six months in the Australian jobs market,” Olivier Group director, Robert Olivier, said in a statement.

“The continuing underlying confidence of Australian consumers and employers has shown how deeply resilient our economy is.”

Olivier attributed the recent drop in Australia’s unemployment rate to 5.5 per cent in December, to the rise in job ads.

Despite the recovery in job ads, employees and job seekers have been urged to think twice before demanding higher salaries in 2010.

Regional director of Hays IT, Peter Noblet, told Computerworld that although there will be some niche areas within IT with the flexibility to demand higher salaries and contract rates, it won’t be a case of job seekers being able to demand top level prices again just yet.

The Olivier Job Index surveyed 153,137 job ads on average each week in December.
