Telstra to sell Acer 3G laptops

Telco claims bundles a "cheap mobile office"

Telstra has begun spruiking bundled broadband data plans with Acer laptops to its business customers.

The Next-G embedded laptops are offered with new mobile broadband plans through Telstra Business Centres and stores.

Telstra Business group managing director Deena Shiff said the new business laptop bundles are geared towards small to medium enterprises.

"These laptops provide a simple way for small business to equip their business for mobile working while avoiding large upfront costs and maintaining their cash flow," Shiff said.

The Acer embedded laptops include the Aspire One 531, and the TravelMate 8371 and 8571 notebooks.

The Aspire One 531 will require a $19 member data pack, and monthly repayments of $28.29 over two years.

Telstra doubled the data allowance for some SMB subscription plans last month, and offered access to casual plans without lock-in.

The telco offered its 'elite' devices for free on some 24-month contracts and said its data allowance on the $39 standard plan – currently 400MB – will be "seven times more data than previously".

Telstra’s plans are notoriously more expensive than its competitors’ wireless broadband plans, but the telco boasts Australia’s fastest and largest network.

A report from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) said the wireless broadband uptake grew by 162 per cent in 2009 and wireless subscribers accounted for a quarter of all Internet users.

Telstra's new plans offer:

  • The addition of a 3GB and 6GB plan
  • Doubling the monthly data allowance on its entry level plan to 400MB
  • No additional usage charges on new plans
  • Rebates of up to $299 for a new USB or $200 for a wireless gateway.

Telstra has also announced loyalty discounts and additional savings for customers with multiple products.

More information on the laptop deal is available through Telstra.
