Toshiba's update on its TG01 multimedia smartphone has made a quiet debut at this week's Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona.

Without the lights, smoke and fanfare given to other handsets by rival manufacturers, the phone is on display at Toshiba's booth.

From the outside it looks similar to the TG01, which went on sale last year and is recognizable by its large display.

The TG02 features the same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and, like the TG01, has a 4.1-inch touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution (WVGA). The resistive touchscreen on the old model has been swapped for a capacitive touchscreen, which should mean smoother performance for users.

On the connectivity side the phone comes equipped with quad-band GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and dual-band 3G network support. The 3G support includes high-speed 7.2M bps (bits per second) download and 5.76M bps upload. Additionally it has Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi 802.11b/g.

Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera, assisted GPS positioning and a MicroSD card slot to allow for memory expansion up to 32GB.

The phone is based on Windows Mobile 6.5.3, which is one of the latest versions of the Microsoft mobile OS but not the new version unveiled at the show on Monday. Windows Phone 7 Series isn't due out until the end of this year, indicating the TG02 will likely be on sale before then. However, Toshiba didn't provide a launch date for the phone.
