Sun continues server sale declines in Q409

Revenues drop a massive 20.6 per cent year on year to US$135.5 in the quarter

Server revenue rebounded in Australia in the final quarter of 2009, with positive year-on-year growth of 21 per cent, according to the latest server market figures from Gartner.

A challenging economic environment during 2009 saw server shipments to the Asia Pacific region decline 3.8 per cent year-on-year, according to the analyst firm, while vendor revenue fell 6.2 per cent year-on-year.

Despite this, Asia Pacific server shipments grew 19.6 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2009 while revenue grew 9.1 per cent year-on-year.

Total server shipments to the Asia Pacific region during the fourth quarter was 417,531 units and vendor revenue reached $US2.07 billion.

In wider APAC results, the Greater China region, Hong Kong and Taiwan experienced a strong fourth quarter thanks to a restoration of business confidence.

“Likewise, server revenue in Australia and Singapore also saw a rebound in the fourth quarter, thanks to active spending by the public sector,” Gartner principal research analyst, Erica Gadjuli, said in a statement, “Server consolidation in major sectors such as financial services and telecommunication continued to be key driver for IT spending in China.”

In the vendor stakes, IBM topped the market with fourth quarter revenues of $US839.5 million for 2009, up from $US793.7million in the corresponding 2008 period.

HP recorded revenues in the same period of $US679.7 million, up from $US589.9 year-on-year, and Dell recorded revenues of $US226.4 million up from $US180.8 million year on year.

Sun was the only top five vendor to experience server sales declines, with a sizable 20.6 per cent dip recorded from its $US170.6 million revenues in the fourth quarter of 2008, down to $135.5 million in Q409.

Lenovo, in number five slot, recorded Q409 revenues of $US34.4 million, up 12.7 per cent on Q408’s figure of $US30.5 million.
