I paid a visit to my partner working in a hospital over the weekend and couldn't help overhearing an amusing insight into how technology has created a confusing linguistic evolution. (What else can you do in a waiting room without a copy of CW?)
An excited girl receives a text message and holds her mobile two inches from her grandmother's glasses. The grandmother narrates:
"Hope you are well nan, sorry that I couldn't be there but I forgot to do my assignment. LOL Dennis"
A pause.
"Lots of love, Dennis. Oh, that's nice"
"No gran," the girl says. "That's L-O-L: Laugh Out Loud, he's saying he is laughing."
I certainly was.
