NBN Co to commence evaluating construction partners for the network rollout.

The company responsible for the roll out of the national broadband network (NBN), NBN Co, will commence evaluating construction partners to help it lay more than 200,000 kilometres of optic fibre cable.

NBN Co has kicked off a request for capability statement process with a view to launching a tender process mid-year.

NBN Co head of construction, Patrick Flannigan, said in a statement the company wanted to hear from organisations with experience in delivering large-scale construction projects.

“The process will also encourage mid-tier and smaller contractors that wish to register an interest and will ultimately help them offer their services to the head contractors,” the NBN Co statement reads.

More information can be found on NBN Co’s website.

The request for capability statement process comes just days after NBN Co claimed strong industry support for its layer two network design and choice of Ethernet or Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology for delivering high speed broadband as part of the NBN.

Telstra disagreed with the NBN Co’s proposal to have only 100 to 200 points of interconnect (PoI) in the NBN, however, saying the move is “neither pro-competitive nor pro-choice”.

Computerworld also revealed NBN Co has chosen Oracle applications over SAP in a deal highlighted by Oracle’s president in its global financial reporting conference call.
