Aurora Energy completes backhaul fibre upgrade

Network fibre upgrade increases bandwidth capacity to 10Gbps

Aurora Energy has announced the completion of an optical fibre upgrade to the Tasmanian Government Network, TasGovNet. The upgrade will provide up to 10 gigabits of bandwidth capacity to the island's four major population centres of Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport.

The network upgrade, initially begun in November last year, involved the implementation of Nokia Siemens Networks' hiT 7300 platform, which uses dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technologies to enhance bandwidth capacity.

"With DWDM you can do up to 10 gigabit wavelengths," Aurora's telecommunications strategic advisor Gary Eiszele said. "There are a number of wavelengths that are being lit up initially and then it's very easy to light more up and add additional wavelengths as we need them. We anticipate from that right down to smaller wavelengths as customers require it."

The network will include Internet services like the Federal Government's National Broadband Network in Tasmania, in which Eiszle said TasGovNet would play a part. It largely involves linking stage 2 NBN locations, including Smithton and Scottsdale, to Hobart.

The backhaul network's increased bandwidth capacity has already attracted interest from parties, but Eiszle would not say which markets or companies were involved in negotiations.

TasGovNet was initially built on the back of gas pipes constructed on the island several years ago. It was commercialised by the Tasmanian Government in 2008. Aurora Energy now sells the service wholesale.
