iiNet touts new data centre

Green facility will increase efficiency and improve reliability, the ISP says

iiNet (ASX:IIN) is touting its green credentials with the launch of its new energy efficient data centre at its Osborne Park facility in Western Australia.

The facility will host 88 of the ISP's racks which are used to service around 750,000 services and will address the company’s need for efficiency, reliability, reduction in operational expenses and reduced power consumption.

The new facility is based on APC’s Hot Aisle Containment System which iiNet believes will improves power usage effectiveness, or PUE, by about 50 per cent.

The system houses racks in an enclosure which prevents the mixing of cold coolant air with extracted hot air generated by the racks.

The data centre also uses Project Rentals’ sound attenuated diesel generator, which iiNet says will withstand the consistent high temperatures during Perth’s summer period.

After much speculation, iiNet has also recently announced that it will shore up business in Victoria and Tasmania, announcing it will buy fellow internet service provider, Netspace. iiNet chief executive officer, Michael Malone, said the company had entered into a binding agreement to acquire Netspace for $40 million as part of the provider’s strategy to increase market share to 15 per cent.
