Telstra's Queensland customers have experienced trouble making phone calls and receiving emails after the telco's NextG network went down earlier today.

Telstra (ASX: TLS) attributed the problems to changes made in the network core overnight in its Queensland 850MHz Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) frequency band.

Telstra spokesperson, Craig Middleton, said the effect the network outage had on customers was "dramatically reduced" because of a "fallback onto the 2G and 3G networks". However, Telstra's Queensland customers are still experiencing slower data speeds on their smartphones.

Telstra has reversed the changes made overnight and is currently implementing a series of solutions that will restore services for its users by moving them to its 2G and 2100 MHz 3G networks. It is unknown when the service will be back up to speed.

This network outage has occurred a day after Telstra's Bourke Street T-Life shop was blocked by striking workers. It also comes on the same day the Federal Government released the NBN Implementation Study that says it can build the broadband network without Telstra.

Optus has also experienced a similar network congestion on their Internet services when their US link was hit by a China-based DDOS attack last month.
