Holographic TV is the future, literally. Japanese tech-heads revealed proposals to FIFA this week to host the 2022 World Cup, offering with it holographic broadcasts to the globe.
This year viewers will have to settle for 3DTV as the leading way to watch the 2010 World Cup, but if Japan's six billion dollar bid from the Japan Football Association for the 2022 football tournament is successful things could be very different.
The Japanese have proposed to capture all 360 degrees of World Cup matches using up-to 200 HD cameras, the footage from which would then be used to project life like full 3D images onto genuine football fields the world over. What does this mean? It means that potentially I could go to my national stadium (Wembley), sit down and see the game that was taking place in Japan as if it was happening right in front of my eyes - With holographic players moving around the pitch.
In addition to sharing the 3D holographic action, the plans also list intentions to capture and distribute audio from pitch level, including every whistle to every free kick.
Of course making this vision a reality is another matter, however director of technology for the 2022 bid, Jun Murai, is positive. Murai stated that despite the idea seeming like something out of a science fiction film, he hoped the technology would be in place by 2016.
