WA welfare departments call in UC

Department of Child Protection and the Department for Communities replace aging phone systems

The Western Australian Department of Child Protection (DCP) and the Department for Communities (DFC) are planning to upgrade and replace their existing telephone systems in a bid to move closer to a fully unified communications environment.

In departmental documents, the Departments said they were seeking to expand their current Nortel/Avaya IP solution by upgrading and replacing existing telephone systems and handsets with solutions from the same vendors across 45 offices.

The DCP presently uses Telstra Hosted IP Telephony using Broadsoft and Nortel Digital, and an IP communication system owned by the DCP itself.

“The proposed plan, moving forward, is to standardise on a single model to accommodate any required telephony replacements or upgrades,” the documents read.

“The Departments need to have the flexibility to pace its evolution to Unified Communications (UC) and communications-enabled business processes whilst keeping in line with business priorities.

“Up to now, traditional and limited IP telephony has been deployed on a site by site basis. IP Telephony and UC have created the opportunity for the Departments to strike a new level of centralisation and functionality.”

The departments said that the new communications solution would be a staged hybrid telephony solution in order to balance its investment in existing phone systems with emerging technology and functions such as unified communications, presence and voicemail, and email integration.

It would also include a single technology platform with an eye to standardising the telecommunications infrastructure and will be easily upgraded to follow emerging trends.

Both departments have a total workforce of about 3,000 administrative and professional staff.
