Lenovo tries hand at 3D with new laptop

Lenovo's 3D laptop will include a 15.6-inch screen

PC maker Lenovo on Thursday announced its first 3D laptop, aimed at gamers and users who want to watch HD movies.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d includes a 15.6-inch screen, 3D glasses and software to make the laptop more interactive, the company said.

The 3D craze has spread from cinemas to TVs and now to laptops. Asus announced two 3D laptops earlier this month with 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch screens. Acer last year announced a laptop with 15.6-inch 3D screen. However, adoption of the laptops has been slow because of high prices and lack of interest.

But Lenovo hopes its laptop will take off as more 3D content becomes available.

Cable providers have announced plans for 3D content and media companies are announcing new 3D movie titles, said Michael Littler, a Lenovo spokesman. The gaming industry is also ramping up 3D efforts, with new titles and gaming consoles being updated, Littler said.

The Y560d laptop comes with an Intel Core i7 processor and an ATI Radeon HD5730 graphics card made by Advanced Micro Devices. An HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connects the laptop to gaming consoles, set-top boxes and TVs. The laptop, which has 750GB of hard-drive storage and 8GB of RAM, also has a built-in stereo system.

The laptop incorporates TriDef 3D technology, which can take normal 2D content such as movies and make it appear in 3D, according to TriDef's Web site.

The device is priced starting at US$1,199.99, including a 3D panel and glasses. The laptop will become available worldwide in late June.
