PMG deploys new network software

The upgrade will mean higher quality content and simplified operations for the broadcaster

Premier Media Group (PMG) has deployed a new network infrastructure in the quest for increased reliability, simplified management and program quality.

The sports broadcaster has implemented the Junos operating system (OS) from Juniper Networks, which includes the installation of 24 EX4200 Ethernet switches in PMG’s mobile production units for transportation between venues, as well as two MX240 universal edge routers which remain at PMG’s production headquarters in Sydney.

Speaking to Computerworld Australia, PMG’s chief technology officer, Tony Scanlan, said reasons for the change came down to future customer expectations for HD and 3D broadcasting, and the need for a more reliable service.

“Reliability is key," he said. "If we lose a run or a wicket in [our broadcast of] the cricket it’s not as if we can go back and resend it. So certainly, reliability was one of the top ones, along with the ease of operation.”

Previously, PMG was using a satellite-based pay-per-use service with MPEG-2 type compression technologies, meaning a one-way (from venue to production centre), heavily compressed signal and high transmission costs.

According to Scanlan, by contrast, the Junos OS enables two-way communication between various venues and the production centre, and virtually uncompressed content. This results in higher quality content and the ability for match statistics, player profile information and other in-match information to be sent in real time to commentators during live broadcasts.

“It really simplifies the operation," he said. "It means there’s a lot less hassle a lot less chance for error and it just means that the whole operation is a lot simpler and smoother.”

The new system has replaced a “very confusing, very complicated” network infrastructure, which Scanlan describes as a “scheduling nightmare.”

“Our staff no longer has to manage disparate network devices," he said. "Junos OS is very intuitive and has a centralised management platform that has simplified our processes and dramatically increased productivity.”

The EX4200 switches are installed in PMG’s 12 outside broadcast units and hook up to its carrier’s optical network interface at each stadium, enabling connection via the virtual private network at PMG’s production centre.

In addition to the MX240 Ethernet service routers, PMG has also implemented the Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager.
