While politicians continue to bicker about the establishment of an carbon emissions trading scheme, activist hackers have taken matters into their own hands smearing the European Climate Exchange web site with anti-cap and trade messages.
The hacktivists, operating under the collective Decocidio #0 had defaced the London carbon credit trading platform with a “super promo climate sale” over the weekend. The moniker is said to mean “code kill” according to Belgium Wikipedia user Damhert and has links to the radical Earth First! environmental movement.
The group wrote the purpose of a carbon cap and trade agreement is “not to reduce emissions, but to help polluters meet ‘reduction’ targets in the cheapest way possible, in a business-as-usual scenario”. It said further that such a plan “leaves room for unverifiable manipulation [and] generates outrageous profits for big industry polluters, investors in fraudulent offset projects, opportunist traders and new 'marketplaces' such as the European Climate Exchange”.
The defacement included the embedded promo of climate change film The Story of Cap & Trade. The group wrote that it is not affiliated with the European Climate Exchange, Carbon Trade Watch, or The Story of Stuff Project.

The attack comes days after a government portal for senior public servants was hacked.
The web page of the SageCentre, a multi-agency project administered by the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, was replaced with a text display of the hacker’s moniker. The site aims to help minimise knowledge loss from retiring experienced public servants.
A request has been lodged with the department regarding the cause and impact of the breach.
