Oracle 8i moves into production

Oracle's much delayed 8i Internet database is now in production and will be available shortly, local officials said yesterday.

Brett Hannath, Oracle's regional marketing manager - database and servers, said 8i was in production on Sun's Solaris platform and would be available in the next two to four weeks on Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX and in up to six weeks for Windows NT portals.

Oracle plans to attack the Windows NT market and Microsoft's SQL Server traditional stronghold with 8i, Hannath said. Traditionally, Oracle has owned the high-end database market, while SQL Server has been convincing in the small-to-medium sized enterprise (SME) space. With both Oracle and Microsoft's latest database releases, the vendors are aggressively targeting the other's territory.

Hannath said 8i would enrich a company's data storage. He said research showed just 1 per cent of a company's data was typically stored in its database. Hannath said that 8i's storage abilities meat more data could be easily stored in the database.

In other announcements yesterday, Oracle launched an aggressive attack at the Windows NT market and committed to porting its entire product line to Linux.

"All our core technologies will be available on the Linux platform in six months' time," said Jason Fedder, Oracle's regional marketing manager - Intel solutions. "We're taking it very seriously."

He said Linux represented the biggest threat to the Microsoft operating system monopoly. Sixty per cent of Intel servers are now shipped with Linux because Microsoft is not allowing the hardware vendors to ship product with NT, Fedder said.

He said that 8i for Linux would be available by the end of April.
