Queensland hits 200k ClimateSmart households

Realtime electricity and carbon monitoring initiative will help cut state's CO2 by one third come 2020

The Queensland Government is claiming a milestone in its ClimateSmart Home Service scheme, booking its 200,000th customer.

The scheme sees the State Government provide a wireless power monitor, plus up to 15 power saving light globes, to households to encourage greater power conservation.

The scheme, which began in January 2009, also supplies households, where applicable, with a water saving shower head.

The power monitor assesses household electricity use and provides a real-time readout of how much electricity is being used, how much the home's current usage is costing per hour and how much CO2 emissions the home is producing.

According to Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, the 200,00 households who had signed up thus far would collectively save up to $65 million on their power and water bills and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 3.5 million tonnes.

Climate Change and Sustainability Minister, Kate Jones, claimed each individual ClimateSmart home could save up to 2.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year and up to $325 each year on their power bills by making their homes more energy efficient.

The ClimateSmart homes will also help the state achieve its goal of cutting the state’s carbon footprint by one-third by 2020.
