Lindsay Tanner joins academia at Victoria University

Outgoing Finance minister to contribute to thought leadership in research and knowledge transfer

Outgoing Finance minister, Lindsay Tanner, will take up the new role of Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at Victoria University.

Throughout the Labor administration Tanner was instrumental in overseeing the Australian Government Information Management Office’s (AGIMO) work on the Gershon Review changes and following through with the Government 2.0 Taskforce’s recommendations.

As one of his last acts in July, Tanner made a declaration of open government.

In announcing the Declaration on the AGIMO blog he said the Australian Government was officially committed to open government based on a “culture of engagement, built on better access to and use of government held information, and sustained by the innovative use of technology”.

In his new role, Tanner will “contribute to thought leadership in research and knowledge transfer in the area of economic, industry and social analysis, working alongside researchers in relevant faculties, research centres and institutes”, a Victoria University statement said.

Tanner announced that he would retire from politics in late June but a replacement has yet to be named, leaving the ICT industry unsure of who will drive Gershon reforms – should they proceed – in the next 12 months.
