Curtin University switches to IP network

One of the first Asia-Pacific region deployments of 10Gigabit Ethernet networking technology is under way at Curtin University in Western Australia.

The technology rollout will extend to 10,000 nodes across four of the university's campuses, providing IP-based video and data infrastructure to more than 29,000 students and 2800 staff.

The Ethernet technology will allow network managers at Curtin to scale their network up to 10,000Mbps.

Manager of network services at Curtin, Andrew McDonald, said the new IP network will let staff share teaching resources with students online and put lectures on video.

McDonald said another application for the 10Gigabit Ethernet is IP-based Storage Area Networking (SAN).

Curtin is the WA's largest university and has campuses located throughout the state, from Perth to Kalgoorlie and as far away as Esperance, 720 kilometres from the capital.

To support high-bandwidth connections over extended distances, the network will consist of Cisco's Catalyst 6500 series and 3500 series switches; Dimension Data is the project integrator.
