Sensis collaborates with NearMap to add aerial images to maps

The company aims to improve the quality and detail of its existing maps

Australian search and directory company, Sensis, has signed a memorandum of understanding with photo and terrain mapping provider, NearMap.com, for the use of its aerial imagery.

The agreement, announced at the spatial@gov Conference and Exhibition in Canberra, will see Sensis enlist the imagery, called PhotoMaps, to improve the quality and detail of its existing maps.

Sensis group manager of location navigation, Peter Barclay, said the partnership would assist the company in giving customers up-to-date mapping information.

“NearMap.com offers a high frequency of updates to its imagery of capital cities and major regional centres,” he said.

NearMap.com chief executive, Simon Crowther, said the collaboration of PhotoMaps with Sensis’ maps would give a locational capability that echoing what is “on the ground right now”.

The agreement will form the grounding from which both companies can on-sell either company’s products to new and existing customers in Australia and New Zealand.

The service will add to Sensis’s existing business to business features, including in-car navigation and routing systems, by offering all routing, tracking and mapping needs from one provider.

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) also announced at the conference it will implement a web-based mapping service in 2011 allowing its staff to better identify and locate Australians on the electoral role.

The RollMap solution, developed by PSMA Australia, will enable the commission’s 150 individual electoral offices to easily identify individual registrants and determine any potential anomalies without requiring internal geospatial expertise.
