Alcatel-Lucent sets up global services center in India

The new Bangalore center is the first in the Asia-Pacific region

Alcatel-Lucent has opened a services delivery center in Bangalore that can manage, operate and maintain multivendor fixed and mobile telecommunications networks, the company said.

The center is the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, and will do work for the company's clients in India and abroad, a spokesman in India for the company said on Tuesday."

Alcatel-Lucent has similar service centers in the U.S., Poland and Romania.

India is a growing market for global telecommunications equipment and service providers. A number of telecom operators are expected to roll out their new 3G networks and expand existing networks.

The country's largest mobile service providers, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications are Alcatel-Lucent's customers.

"We work with almost all the service providers in the country," the spokesman said.

Alcatel-Lucent and competitors like Ericsson, Huawei Technologies and Nokia-Siemens Networks have been brought under new security rules by India's Department of Telecommunications. The rules require suppliers to, among other things, provide the government with access to the software source code and engineering designs of equipment. The rules are under review following objections from some of these companies.

The Bangalore services center is already operational and providing round-the-clock services for more than 10 Alcatel-Lucent customers. The 8,000-square-foot center is staffed with more than 100 network operations specialists, the company said.
