IBM cuts 190 jobs, Fujitsu adds 50

IBM moves server manufacturing operations from Ireland to China

IBM is moving its hardware manufacturing operations in Dublin to China, resulting in the loss of 190 jobs.

Separately, Fujitsu is on a recruitment drive for its Northern Ireland operations.

IBM's low end/mid-range server manufacturing operations will move from the Technology Campus in Mulhuddart in Dublin to Shenzhen, China by March 2011.

"This change will place us closer to our growth markets and suppliers, while providing greater operational efficiency and cost savings," IBM said in a statement.

A spokesperson for IBM said that consultations have started with employees facing job losses, whose options are redeployment, depending on their skills, or taking a redundancy package from the company.

"We are currently hiring into our software and services spaces. There are currently 66 jobs being advertised [in Dublin] across sales, services and software," the spokesperson said.

IBM has been transforming its Dublin operations from hardware manufacturing to providing more software and services in recent years. In March 2008, the IBM and Industrial Development Agency of Ireland (IDA Ireland) announced the Technology Campus as Europe's first cloud computing centre.

In contrast, Fujitsu is looking to expand its Managed IT Services Centre in Londonderry. The move is driven by a strong performance in its Northern Ireland operations, according to Michael Stuart, operations manager of Fujitsu UK & Ireland.

Fujitsu is recruiting 50 staff to add to its more than 150-strong workforce at the location.

The company is looking for experienced IT professionals, including graduates, for jobs in its IT and Application Services divisions. The new roles will support the firm's delivery of specialist infrastructure solutions in Java/.Net, Unix, Wintel Server and Desktop technologies.

Last month, AOL announced that it was creating 20 new jobs at its development centre in Dublin, following Google's announcement that it plans to hire 200 people at a new operations centre in the Irish capital.
