NBN Co goes on hiring spree

More than 100 jobs available as at early November to help build out the National Broadband Network

The NBN Co has dramatically ramped up its hiring activity, posting an average of three new roles a day on its job vacancy site, as its rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) ramps up.

As of early November the site had more than 100 positions available including solution architects, account managers and network engineers.

An NBN Co spokesperson told Computerworld Australia the NBN currently had 360 full time employees, 144 of whom have been hired since 30 June.

NBN Co began as a start up in July last year with the appointment of Mike Quigley as chief executive, swiftly followed by a management team.

Since then, the company has been progressively hiring in ‘priority areas’ related to network design and corporate centre roles.

“Currently much of the hiring is in the operation and construction management areas because of the stage of the project we are now in,” the spokesperson said.

In July, NBN Co said it would create some 425 new jobs with the construction of its network testing and operations centre (NOC) in Melbourne. The NOC will assist new customers of the NBN, coordinating and provisioning fault repairs, managing network traffic, providing data for billing and taking service orders from retail service providers

It is also in the construction phase at its five first NBN release sites which include communities in Melbourne, Townsville, NSW and South Australia

The spokesperson declined to comment on how many employees the NBN Co would grow to or what other roles would be advertised in the near future, but added there had been an “excellent response” to jobs advertised on its website.

The company flagged an internal IT expenditure of $6.4 million to 30 June 2010, including a transition through three different enterprise resource planning systems before settling on an Oracle-supplied solution.
