OK Labs' virtualisation deployed in one billion devices

NICTA spin-off taking virtualisation and security to smartphones and mobile devices around the world

National ICT Australia (NICTA) has reported that its Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) spin-off has notched up the billionth deployment of its virtualisation software on a mobile device.

See Computerworld Australia's Virtualization Technology Guide.

The company’s OKL4 Microvisor virtualisation software allows device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and semiconductor suppliers to incorporate features into new mobile designs more quickly and for lower cost.

OK Labs was spun out of NICTA in 2006 initially shipping its OKL4 software.

It has since released its Nirvana Phone Mobile-to-Enterprise Virtualisation (M2E) application with Citrix which enables the delivery enterprise applications and data to mobile devices.

Most recently it released its OK Labs SecureIT Mobile product for building and deploying secure communications.

According to NICTA’s outgoing chief executive, Dr David Skellern, OK Labs’ one billion milestone showcased NICTA’s research credentials.

“The success of OK Labs shows the power of visionary research combined with smart commercial execution and great people,” Skellern said in a statement.

“I am very proud that NICTA recognised the potential of the original research which led to this fantastic outcome for OK Labs. Congratulations!”

The success of OK Labs follows the announcement that NICTA will be funding additional research via a NSW Government funding boost of $9 million over the next three years, bringing total funding for the organisation from the state government to $34.5 million.

“The funding will be used to address some of the important issues that the NSW and Australian economies are facing, such as relieving traffic congestion and making our infrastructure smarter and safe, as well as addressing the health challenges that we increasingly face with an aging population,” Skellern said in October.
