Kinect, Microsoft's new motion control gaming system, launched across America this Thursday. And as is the case with any new and noteworthy tech product, the folks over at iFixit got straight to work on taking the Kinect apart, all in the name of geek curiosity.
So, what did they find within? For one, iFixit uncovered that Microsoft's Kinect has a lot of technology crammed into a really small space--with two cameras, an IR projector, four microphones, and a mainboard all tightly packed into the plastic enclosure of the $150 device. In fact, the Kinect is so tightly packed that the mainboard had to be split into three separate sections.
The Kinect also houses a motor and gears within its base, which are used to rotate the device so it can keep track of players as they move around a room. However, iFixit found a problem with this--the gears are made from plastic, which, according to iFixit, don't look too robust, so they may wear out more quickly than you'd like.
