Half of Optus customers on 3G

Optus had nearly 8.9m mobile customers by end-September, with more than half of these using its 3G network, according to parent SingTel (ASX:SGT)

Optus' mobile customer base grew eight per cent sequentially in the September quarter, parent company SingTel (ASX:SGT) has revealed.

The company added 189,000 customers during the quarter to bring the total to nearly 8.9 million, SingTel said in a statement.

The number of subscribers to Optus' 3G services increased to 4.5 million. Wireless broadband customers surpassed one million.

In Singapore, SingTel's mobile customer base increased to 3.2 million, from 3.1 million the quarter before.

Groupwide, the company ended the quarter with 367.9 million mobile subscribers, up 35 per cent from a year ago.

SingTel counts in this total the customers of the affiliates in which it has a substantial holding - India's Bharti Airtel, India's Telkomsel, Thailand's AIS, the Philippines' Globe, Pakistan's Warid and Bangladesh's PBTL.

SingTel said the group now has a footprint covering some 2 billion people. Its operations span Asia as well as Africa, where Bharti Airtel recently acquired networks in 16 countries.
